What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job with a structured training programme that provides practical skills and knowledge for a specific job role.

Am I employed?

Yes, apprentices are employed and receive a contract of employment with details on working hours, pay, and holiday entitlement.

How many hours will I work? 

Apprentices usually work at least 30 hours per week, with some employers requiring more than 30 hours.

Will I be paid?

Yes, apprentices earn a salary while they learn, with pay varying by age and location.

Will I have to pay tax?

Yes, apprentices are employed and are required to pay tax if they meet the income threshold.

What about National Insurance? 

If you are under 25, you are not required to pay Class 2 National Insurance contributions.

Is there support available for apprentices? 


Yes, apprentices can receive support from their employer, training provider, and government funding

How do I find an apprenticeship? 

You can search for apprenticeship vacancies online, often through government websites or training providers.

What happens at the end of the apprenticeship? 

Some apprentices are offered permanent employment, while others may move on to further qualifications or different roles. 

Can I do another apprenticeship after I’ve finished one?

Yes, you can do another apprenticeship if you meet the entry requirements for the new role.

What if I don’t get a job at the end?

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job with training. Your apprentice works while gaining a qualification and developing skills for their role.

Who can be an apprentice?

New or existing staff, they must be aged 16+ and not in full-time education. They must have the right to work in the UK

What are my responsibilities?

As an employer, you need to pay the apprentice at least the minimum wage; provide time for training; support their learning and development and work with an approved training provider

What is “off-the-job” training?

This is learning done during working hours but away from regular tasks. It includes online or classroom learning, mentoring, projects and assignments and supervision 

What does it cost?

Large employers use their Apprenticeship Levy and small employers pay 5% of the training cost – the government covers the rest. You pay the apprentice’s wages

    What are the benefits?

    How long is an apprenticeship?

    Apprenticeships last 12 months to 4 years, depending on the role and level.
