Shared Decision Making Training

To support practitioners to learn the process of good quality Shared Decision Making Conversations

Shared Decision Making means people are supported to understand the care, treatment and support options available and the risks, benefits and consequences of those options, and to make a decision about a preferred course of action, based on evidence-based, good quality information and their personal preferences.

It is a process in which practitioners and individuals work together to select tests, treatments, management or support packages, based on evidence and the individual’s informed preferences, rather than the individual being told what to do by the practitioner.

Shared Decision Making is relevant in any non-life threatening situation when a health or care decision needs to be made, and a range of options (including doing nothing), is available.

Our Shared Decision Making Programme

Our Shared Decision Making training can be a half day or full day module, delivered virtually, that will support practitioners from all health, care, community and voluntary sectors to learn the process of good quality Shared Decision Making and provide individuals with the knowledge, skills and techniques to support people in making decisions about their health and care.

The programme covers:

  • Overview of shared decision-making
  • How we make decisions
  • Health literacy
  • Key elements of a shared decision-making conversation
  • Shared decision-making skills development and practice

The programme is experiential and practical; participants will learn some of the background and rationale for shared decision making, and techniques and skills to support them in having shared decision making conversations, and there will be opportunities to learn new skills and practice in safe environment.

This programme was developed in partnership with NHS Birmingham and Solihull and NHS Herefordshire & Worcestershire.

This programme is accredited by the Personalised Care Institute.
